THE SONG OF SONGS
The Song of Songs is a book that stands out for its ambiguous content and is considered one of the most enigmatic parts of the Old Testament. The distinctive, highly expressive illustrations, full of symbols and allegories, are like a key to understanding the mystical meaning of the biblical text.

on a 19th-century Dingler hand press.
The version used for the publication was taken from the Bible published by the Moscow Patriarchate in 1988 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus’ (the adoption of Christianity by the Eastern Slavs).
The cover decorated by Valery Mishin using thin braided strips of leather continues the romantic-lyrical theme in the subjects of the illustrations. The material chosen, its colour and texture become a visual expression of the wealth of feelings and emotional experiences contained in the text of the Song of Solomon. The artist participated directly in the preparation of the material – the braiding of the strips – for subsequent use by the bookbinders. The title of the book is burnt into the velvety surface of the cover.
The artistic treatment given to the cover by the artist Mikhail Kopylkov is marked by refinement and a restrained laconic manner. The book is covered with skilfully dressed leather. The title on the front cover is made from copper embellished with silver and enamel. A lily in the upper right-hand corner is an emblem of the Tribe of Judah. The back cover carries two doves, an ancient Jewish symbol of atonement.
The book has a storage case decorated with fabric.
