One of the most difficult books of the biblical canon for the “uninitiated” to grasp was first brought out by the Rare Books from Saint Petersburg publishing house in 1994. A second edition came 16 years later, in 2010. The illustrations for those books were created by the artist Yury Lyukshin.
A desire to come closer to an understanding of the meaning of this paradoxical piece of scripture, to a knowledge of the secret of life’s course and the human being’s true destiny prompted the creation of The Book of Ecclesiastes or The Preacher in a new philosophical interpretation constructed upon a “dialogue of thought and mystery”. The first copy of the third edition of the biblical text came out in March 2018. The illustrations and the design for the copper relief on the cover were created by the artist Yury Kuper.

The Russian-language text was taken from the Bible published by the Moscow Patriarchate (Moscow, 2010) and printed on a 19th-century Dingler hand press. The Hebrew text was taken from the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia and printed by the silk-screen method.
The book includes 15 illustrations produced by the artist Yury Kuper in the rare photogravure (heliogravure) technique. The making of the plates and printing of the illustrations was carried out in Fanny Boucher’s atelier in Paris, the only studio in France to produce illustrations using this technique.
Natural leather was chosen for the cover and its colour goes with the bronze relief placed on the front of the book. That relief was also designed by Yury Kuper. Several metal-finishing techniques were employed to implement the artist’s concept: patination, silvering and gilding.
The endpapers were made from French silk printed with an original design based on the artist’s sketches. The book has a storage case decorated with fabric.
