Tonino Guerra

Born in Santarcangelo di Romagna, Italy in 1920. Died in his birthplace in 2012.
   
A great Italian poet, artist, sculptor, writer and scriptwriter. Studied at Urbino University before WWII. After graduating from its Pedagogical Faculty in 1946, he worked as a schoolteacher.
 
Tonino Guerra is well-known as an artist who worked with all kinds of different materials and in different media and fields of artistic creativity. He produced numerous watercolours, pastels, and paintings, and invented his own techniques for firing ceramics, moulding metal, and making glass. He created architectural designs for squares, gardens, and sculptures embellishing the streets of Italy. He wrote scripts for more than 100 films, many of which became world classics.
 
He was awarded the Order of Friendship between Peoples (2000) and the Order of Honour (2010) for his contribution to promoting friendship and cultural links between Russia and Italy. In 2005 he was made an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
