In the late Middle Ages, the theme of a dispute between a man and Death occurred frequently across Europe. The Danse Macabre, or Dance of Death, and dialogues between some person and Death found embodiment in the work of writers and artists, in popular satire and in folk theatre performances.
The first work of this type to find its way to Russia was a word-for-word translation of a German dialogue in verse that the printer Bartholomäus Ghotan published in Lübeck in 1482–92 and himself brought to Novgorod in 1494. The translation was reworked several times, also acquiring a title more understandable for Russian readers. The purpose of the work is to remind us of the impermanence of earthly life, of the need for repentance and of everyone’s equality in the face of inevitable mortality.
