Alexei Kamensky (1927-2014)
Born in Sukhumi, Abkhazia in 1927. Died in Moscow, Russia in 2014.
Studied at Moscow’s Surikov State Institute of Art in 1945–51. Taught at the Moscow Institute of Printing Arts and the Extramural People’s University of the Arts.
Nonconformist painter and graphic artist. Worked in watercolour and pastel technique. Illustrated fairy tales for children, mainly in the technique of tempera painting. From the late 1980s, he worked on a large cycle of illustrations for the works of Russian and French poets.
His works can be found in various museums in Russia and abroad, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum and Tula Art Museum. Participated in many exhibitions, both group events (1988, 1989, 2001–02, 2005–06) and one-man shows (1998, 2006, 2007). Member of the Moscow branch of the Artists’ Union.
