IIya Bogdesco (1923-2010)

Born in Botushany, Moldavia in 1923. Died in St Petersburg in 2010.

Graphic artist and painter. Fought in WWII, cavalier of the Order of the Labour Red Flag and of the Order of the October Revolution. People’s Artist of the USSR (1963). Winner of the State Prize of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (1966). Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1988). Won many Soviet and foreign prizes and awards, including at the International Exhibition of Books in Leipzig.
 
Graduated in 1951 from the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad. Taught at the Saratov College of Art in 1952–53. From 1953 lived and worked in Kishinev (Chișinău), capital of the Moldavian SSR, where he was chief artist/designer at the Cartea Moldovenească publishing house. Moved to St Petersburg in 1992. Illustrated more than 100 books. Many of his series of graphic works became classics of book illustration. Created a number of series of works of graphic art, paintings, and monumental paintings.
