THE THIRTY-SIX STRATAGEMS
An Ancient Chinese treatise
For many years this treatise was a restricted source of great Chinese wisdom passed on as arcane knowledge. The stratagems are not merely military cunning, but the key to the secrets of success, the science of power and the art of communicating and managing people.
Painter and graphic artist. Awarded grants from the Russian Ministry of Culture and Russian Artists’ Union. Prize-winner in exhibitions and competitions in the graphic art category. Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia from 2011. Participant in over 50 exhibitions in Russia and abroad, including 18 personal ones.
Painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia. Invented the ReRe (‘residual realism’) technique of flat printing; his experiments have revived interest in rare printing techniques. Has taken part in numerous exhibitions in Russia and abroad.
One of the most successful European practitioners of small-format graphic art, an outstanding master of the mezzotint technique. Worked extensively in poster design in the 1980s–90s, while simultaneously mastering etching techniques. Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia.
Sculptor and graphic artist. His graphic works are marked by particularly fine drawing and precise detail work. Taught sculpture and drawing at the Art Institute of the city of Chengdu, capital of China's Sichuan province. Participant in many exhibitions in Russia and abroad, including over 20 personal ones. Member of the Saint Petersburg Artists’ Union.
Works in the techniques of lithography and etching. Awarded a personal grant of President of the Chuvash Republic Nikolai Fedorov and grants from the Russian Ministry of Culture. Member of the Saint Petersburg Artists’ Union. Made an Honoured Artist of the Chuvash Republic.
An acknowledged master of painting, stand-alone and book graphic art, professor. More than 70 books have been published with the artist’s illustrations. Participant in over 600 exhibitions in Russia and abroad, including 75 personal ones. Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia. Made an Honoured Artist of Russia in 2003.
Graphic artist, calligrapher, painter and sculptor. Participant in the 1st International Calligraphy Exhibition in Moscow in 2008 (and regularly thereafter), as well as many group and personal exhibitions in Russia and abroad. Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia.
Graphic artist and calligrapher. Works in watercolour and traditional print-making techniques — etching, lithography, as well as producing handwritten books. Studied at the Saint Petersburg School of Calligraphy. Participant in exhibitions in Russia and abroad. Member of the Artists’ Union of Russia.
An acknowledged master of calligraphy, he has made an immense contribution to the development and propagation of this art form. Began practising calligraphy at the age of 13. Trained under one of the most renowned contemporary calligraphers, Yang Hong. He teaches at the Chieng Neng Li Russian-Chinese Centre in Saint Petersburg.

The stratagems each comprise a particular sequence of actions on the part of their user, anticipating situations several moves ahead and employing tactical snares in order to reach the intended goal and achieve success. All 36 stratagems take the form of a particular type of idiomatic expression in the Chinese language: behind each phrase lie events that took place almost 3,000 years ago and a host of historical examples of the approach being applied. The name of each stratagem is essentially a brief allusion to a particular behavioural tactic.

The book’s colophon was typeset by hand in the Akademicheskaya palmira typeface and printed on a 19th-century Dingler hand press.
The book contains 36 illustrations:
- 6 illustrations in the colour etching technique by Igor Baranov
- 6 illustrations in the colour etching technique with aquatint by Sergei Kondrashkin
- 6 illustrations in the colour lithography technique by Alexander Fedorov
- 6 illustrations in the etching technique by Valery Mishin
- 6 illustrations in the mezzotint technique by Yury Borovitsky.
The endpapers and the case for the book are decorated with luxurious silk acquired from a shop with a 500-year history and specially imported from China for this publication. The lid of the case is embellished with a metal relief giving the title of the book in Chinese characters.
